ChatGPT Ads for Ecommerce: How They Work, What They Cost and Who Should Test Them
Guide • ChatGPT Ads • Ecommerce
Many shoppers now ask ChatGPT what to buy, comparing options and narrowing a shortlist inside one conversation. Until this year, a store could only show up in those answers through organic visibility. That changed on February 9, 2026, when OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States.
ChatGPT ads are a new paid channel that places sponsored listings next to ChatGPT’s answers. OpenAI has since added cost-per-click bidding, a self-serve Ads Manager in beta, a measurement pixel, a Conversions API and product feeds, and it has expanded the program well beyond the US. For an online store, it is worth understanding now, even if you do not spend on it yet.
This guide explains what ChatGPT ads are, who sees them, how buying and pricing work, what you can track, what you cannot advertise, and how to run a small first test. If you want a team to plan and manage paid campaigns across channels, see our performance marketing services.

We have not run ChatGPT ad campaigns for this article. The program is new and parts of it are still in beta, so confirm current details with OpenAI before you spend.
Quick answer: ChatGPT ads are labeled sponsored listings shown below ChatGPT’s answers to adult users on the Free and Go plans. You can buy them on a CPM or CPC basis through OpenAI’s beta Ads Manager or through agency and technology partners. They are worth a small, tracked test for stores in allowed consumer categories, but not a large budget shift yet.
- Ads appear below ChatGPT answers, are labeled sponsored and, according to OpenAI, do not influence the answer itself.
- Only Free and Go users see ads. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts are ad-free.
- Buying models are CPM, CPC and a conversions objective, which is billed per click or per 1,000 impressions, not per conversion.
- OpenAI’s help center lists a minimum daily budget of USD 25 (EUR 15, GBP 15), but no public rate card.
- Tracking runs through OpenAI’s measurement pixel and Conversions API, and advertisers get aggregate data only.

What ChatGPT Ads Are and Where They Appear
A ChatGPT ad is a sponsored unit placed in the chat interface, separate from ChatGPT’s answer. OpenAI’s help center says ads “can appear below the end of a response,” are labeled as sponsored and are visually separated from the response. One ad unit can show one or more items from one or more advertisers, and product cards are one of the formats shown in OpenAI’s examples.
Each ad has an advertiser name, a favicon, a title, ad copy, an image and a landing page. OpenAI states that “ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you,” so you pay for a listing beside the answer, not for what ChatGPT says. Ads do not appear in Temporary Chats or in OpenAI’s Atlas browser.
Who Sees ChatGPT Ads
When the test launched, OpenAI said ads would be shown to logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts do not see ads. OpenAI says it will not show ads in accounts where the user says, or OpenAI predicts, that they are under 18. The current help center adds that logged-out users may see ads that are “appropriate for all ages,” so check the latest wording if this matters for your audience.
Users can turn off ad personalization, dismiss ads and delete their ad data. Free users can also choose an ad-free option with lower usage limits.
The rollout has moved quickly:
- February 9, 2026: testing began in the US.
- March 26, 2026: OpenAI said pilots in Canada, Australia and New Zealand would start in the coming weeks.
- May 7, 2026: OpenAI said it planned to expand to the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea.
- October 21, 2026: Reuters reported that OpenAI added 26 more countries, bringing the total to 89, and that more than 100,000 advertisers had run campaigns since testing began.
Country coverage and self-serve access are still changing, so check OpenAI’s advertiser pages before planning a campaign outside the US.
How Buying ChatGPT Ads Works
There are two ways to buy. On May 5, 2026, OpenAI announced it was “beginning to roll out” a self-serve Ads Manager in beta and “gradually opening” it to more businesses. In Ads Manager you set budgets, bids and pacing, upload ads and view results. The second route is through partners. OpenAI named Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis and WPP as agency partners, and Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue and StackAdapt as technology partners. OpenAI’s system still controls all delivery decisions.
OpenAI’s campaign help page describes three objectives:
- Views: billed per 1,000 impressions (CPM).
- Clicks: billed per valid click (CPC).
- Conversions: optimizes toward one supported conversion event, billed per click (oCPC) or per 1,000 impressions (oCPM). OpenAI states plainly that “you do not pay per conversion.”
For budgets, you choose a campaign-total budget or a daily budget. A daily budget is an average over a 7-day period. Spend on a single day can reach twice the daily budget, but weekly spend cannot exceed seven times it. OpenAI recommends daily budgets for new advertisers. It also notes that new self-serve accounts may be limited to their home country until identity verification is approved.
What ChatGPT Ads Cost
OpenAI has not published a rate card. Prices are set by bidding, and you pay per 1,000 impressions or per click depending on your objective. The one firm number OpenAI does publish is a minimum daily budget, which varies by billing currency: USD 25, EUR 15, GBP 15 or JPY 2,500, according to its campaign help page. OpenAI does not state a minimum for campaign-total budgets.
Early entry costs were much higher. Axios reported that pilot advertisers previously had to spend at least $50,000 to test, and that the threshold was being removed with the self-serve launch. Adweek, reviewing a leaked StackAdapt pitch deck in April 2026, reported pilot CPMs in a range of $15 to $60. Treat those as early press reports, not current prices.
You can start small, but you will not know your cost per sale until you run a tracked test.
Targeting and Privacy
ChatGPT ads are not keyword ads. OpenAI says it matches ads using the context and intent of the conversation, your ad’s landing page, title and copy, and optional “context hints” you add at the ad group level. OpenAI is clear that context hints “are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery.” When a user has ad personalization turned on, matching can also use past chats, memory and past ad interactions.
Ads Manager adds a few familiar controls. You can target countries, and most campaign types also support states, cities, markets and postal codes. You can choose platforms such as desktop web, iOS and Android. Custom audiences are available, but an inclusion audience needs at least 25,000 matched users, and OpenAI advises against using them for campaigns that target the EEA or Switzerland.
On privacy, OpenAI says it does not share conversations with advertisers and never sells user data to them. Advertisers receive only aggregated performance data, such as views and clicks.
Measuring Results: OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API
OpenAI launched two measurement tools in 2026. The measurement pixel is a JavaScript tag that sends events from the shopper’s browser. The Conversions API sends events from your server, such as confirmed orders. You can use both, and OpenAI’s developer docs explain that sending the same Pixel ID, event name and event ID through each prevents a sale from being counted twice.
Supported standard events include contents_viewed, items_added, checkout_started and order_created, which covers the main steps of an ecommerce funnel. You set an attribution window for each conversion event, and OpenAI’s example uses 30 days after an ad click. A conversions campaign needs exactly one active standard event attached when you create it. Where consent is required, OpenAI says to configure consent controls before the pixel loads.
For catalogs, OpenAI’s Advertiser API supports product feeds that build ads from your products using a template with fields such as title, price and brand. Feed access must be enabled on your account, and product-feed campaigns can target only at the country level. If you are comparing tools to keep this data clean across channels, see our guide to the best conversion tracking software.
Restrictions: What You Cannot Advertise
OpenAI does not show ads to users it identifies as under 18. It also says ads are not eligible to appear near sensitive or regulated topics, including personal health, mental health and politics. Its ad policies page (updated June 4, 2026) notes that in April 2026 OpenAI removed categorical blocks on medical, legal and financial advice contexts, while mental and personal health conversations remain blocked. These rules are still evolving.
The ad policies also limit what you can sell. Disallowed categories include alcohol and tobacco, gambling, cannabis and THC products, cryptocurrency, counterfeit goods, dating and sexual products, prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines, and supplements or wellness products with unsupported claims. Some categories are allowed with conditions:
- Lingerie, underwear and swimwear can run in a standard fashion or retail context.
- Supplements widely sold through major retailers may be allowed if the ad makes no medical claims.
- Non-intoxicating, THC-free CBD topicals may be permitted.
- Financial services advertisers need case-by-case manual approval.
OpenAI also says that during the initial test period, ads are primarily limited to consumer categories such as lifestyle and household goods. Landing pages must match the ad and must not block the OAI-AdsBot or OAI-SearchBot crawlers. If you sell in a regulated category, read the full policy first.
Who Should Test ChatGPT Ads Now and Who Should Wait
Use this box to decide.
Test now or wait?
Based on OpenAI’s current rules and the tools available as of November 8, 2026.
→ You sell allowed consumer products, such as home, lifestyle, apparel or gifts
→ You already track purchases reliably on Google or Meta
→ You can spare a small test budget without hurting proven channels
→ Your products need explanation or comparison before purchase
→ Your category is disallowed or restricted, such as alcohol, supplements with claims or financial products
→ You have no purchase tracking in place yet
→ Your monthly ad budget is already stretched
→ Ads are not yet available in your target country
How to Run a First ChatGPT Ads Test
- Set up tracking first. Install the OpenAI pixel, add the Conversions API if you can, and confirm that
order_createdevents arrive with the right value. - Pick one product line. Choose a category with healthy margins and products people research before buying.
- Start with a small budget. Use a daily budget near the minimum for your currency and raise it only when you see conversions. Remember that daily spend can run up to twice the daily figure.
- Write several ad variations. OpenAI recommends many title and copy variations, each with a different angle, and linking to the most relevant product or collection page rather than your homepage. Add UTM tags so your analytics can separate this traffic.
- Compare CPA with Google and Meta. Measure cost per order and order value against the same product line on your existing channels, using the same attribution window where possible.
- Read results after 4 to 6 weeks. Give the campaign enough time to collect conversions before you scale, pause or adjust it. Judge it on cost per order, not clicks.
Simple, relevant product images and clear copy help OpenAI match your ad to the right conversations. If you need ad creative built for new placements, our AI advertising videos and creative content team can help.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are ChatGPT ads available to all advertisers?
Not fully. OpenAI is gradually opening its beta Ads Manager, and partners can also buy for you. Availability depends on your country and category.
Do ChatGPT ads change what ChatGPT recommends?
OpenAI says no. Ads are labeled and shown separately, and organic visibility in answers is a separate effort.
Who sees ads in ChatGPT?
Adult users on the Free and Go plans. Paid Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts are ad-free.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
There is no public rate card. You bid on a CPM or CPC basis, with a minimum daily budget of USD 25 according to OpenAI’s help center.
Do I pay per sale with a conversions campaign?
No. OpenAI optimizes toward your chosen conversion event, but you are billed per click or per 1,000 impressions, not per conversion.
Can I see what users asked before clicking my ad?
No. Advertisers get no access to conversations or personal details, only aggregated results.
Can I upload my product catalog?
Yes, through product feeds in OpenAI’s Advertiser API, if feed access is enabled for your account. Product-feed campaigns currently support country-level targeting only.
Should I move budget from Google or Meta to ChatGPT?
Not yet. Run a small, tracked test alongside your proven channels and compare cost per order. Our performance marketing team can plan and run that test with you.
Final Take
ChatGPT ads let online stores appear while a shopper is researching what to buy. The basics are in place: CPM and CPC buying, a beta Ads Manager, a pixel, a Conversions API and product feeds. But the channel is months old, rules and coverage are still changing, and there is no public pricing.
If you sell allowed consumer products and already measure purchases well, run a small test on one product line, compare its cost per order with Google and Meta, and decide after four to six weeks. If your tracking is weak or your category is restricted, fix the first or wait for the second to change.
