Best Tax Software for Ecommerce: 5 Tools to Simplify Sales Tax Compliance

22 min read  |  Pricing checked October 2026

Sales tax is simple when you sell in one state. Then your store takes off, orders start shipping to Texas, Florida, and Washington, and you’re reading state revenue department websites at midnight.

Spreadsheets can carry you for a while. But rates change, several jurisdictions can share one ZIP code, and every state sets its own filing calendar. Ecommerce tax software takes over the repetitive work: calculating tax at checkout, watching your nexus exposure, registering, and (depending on the tool) filing returns.

This guide compares five tools built for online sellers: Avalara, TaxCloud, Zamp, Numeral, and Quaderno. You’ll see what each one automates, how it’s priced, which platforms it connects to, and who should skip it.

Affiliate disclosure: TechCognate may earn a commission if you sign up or buy through some links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It doesn’t change how we evaluate or describe any tool, including the drawbacks.

Quick Answer

The best tax software for ecommerce depends on how much of the work you want to hand off. Here’s the short version:

  • Avalara is best for complex, multi-channel sellers that need deep automation and exemption certificate handling. Pricing is quote-based.
  • TaxCloud is the budget pick, with plans from about $19/month and free filing in 24 Streamlined Sales Tax states for eligible sellers.
  • Zamp is best when you want a team to own registrations, filings, and state notices. Pricing is custom.
  • Numeral suits brands that prefer paying per filing: free nexus monitoring, then $75 per return.
  • Quaderno fits sellers who use Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe, and PayPal together, or sell digital products across borders. Plans start at $29/month.

Prices were checked in October 2026 and can change. Confirm current plans on each vendor’s site.

How We Chose These Tools

We looked for tools that U.S. online sellers can realistically use, and we held each one to the same checklist:

  • Built for, or commonly used by, ecommerce sellers in the United States
  • Clear about what it automates: calculation, nexus tracking, registration, filing
  • Connects to Shopify, WooCommerce, or common payment and accounting tools
  • Pricing that’s published, or at least explained honestly
  • A current partner or referral program we could confirm

That last point deserves a plain explanation. We only gave full reviews to tools where we could confirm an active partner or referral program. That’s why some well-known names, including TaxJar, Stripe Tax, Vertex, and Sovos, appear in a short separate section instead. Partner programs are application-based, and approval and terms depend on each vendor.

Pricing can vary based on transaction volume and the features your business needs. Where a vendor doesn’t publish a price, we say so instead of guessing.

1. Avalara — Best for Broad Compliance Automation

Best forMulti-channel sellers, B2B and wholesale, ERP or accounting-heavy stacks
Pricing modelCustom quote, plus a few published flat fees
IntegrationsShopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Amazon, NetSuite, QuickBooks
Ease of useModerate; more setup than lighter tools
ScalabilityHigh
Ideal customerMid-size to enterprise ecommerce, or fast-growing sellers

Avalara is the name most ecommerce sellers hear first. Avalara is best suited to businesses that need broad tax compliance capabilities and advanced automation, from address-level rates at checkout to return filing and exemption certificates.

Why We Like Avalara

What stands out is how much of the workflow it covers. AvaTax calculates tax at the time of sale, Avalara Returns prepares and files returns, and Exemption Certificate Management collects and validates the paperwork wholesale buyers send you.

Those are separate products, so you can add them as you grow instead of paying for everything on day one. The flip side is that your bill grows with every module.

Key Features

  • Address-level sales tax calculation across overlapping jurisdictions
  • Nexus and registration support (registration is listed at $403 per location)
  • Return preparation and filing through Avalara Returns
  • Exemption certificate collection and validation (sold separately)
  • A large library of connectors for ecommerce platforms, ERPs, and accounting tools, plus an API for custom builds

Ecommerce Integrations

WooCommerce sellers can download Avalara’s extension from the Woo Marketplace. Shopify merchants use Avalara’s Tax Compliance app. If you set up the older AvaTax app for Shopify, note that Shopify retired it in 2025, so confirm you’re on the current one.

Avalara also connects to BigCommerce, Amazon, NetSuite, and QuickBooks. If you’re still choosing a platform, our Shopify vs BigCommerce comparison covers how each handles tax at checkout.

Avalara Pricing

Custom pricing. Avalara doesn’t publish AvaTax plan prices. Cost depends on transaction volume, the number of connected systems, and which products you add. Published flat fees include sales tax registration at $403 per location and license guidance from $119. Pricing can vary based on transaction volume and the features your business needs.

Avalara Pros and Cons

✓ Pros

  • Covers calculation, filing, and exemption certificates
  • Large integration library
  • Scales to enterprise volume
  • Handles B2B and wholesale exemptions well

− Cons

  • No public list pricing
  • Cost climbs as you add modules
  • More setup than lighter tools
  • Likely overkill for single-state or low-volume stores

Who Should Use Avalara?

Sellers who run several channels (say, Shopify plus Amazon plus wholesale), collect exemption certificates, or rely on an ERP. It makes the most financial sense once manual work or audit risk costs you more than the software.

Who Should Consider an Alternative?

Single-state or low-volume stores, sellers who want a flat published monthly price, and anyone who wants a done-for-you service instead of software to operate.

Want to automate sales tax across several channels? Check out Avalara to see whether it fits your ecommerce setup.

2. TaxCloud — Best for Budget-Friendly Filing

Best forSmall and mid-size sellers watching costs, especially with sales into SST states
Pricing modelMonthly plans by order volume; filing priced by plan
IntegrationsShopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, Magento, Odoo, QuickBooks Online
Ease of useStraightforward
ScalabilityGood for small to mid-size operations
Ideal customerOnline sellers who want filing without an enterprise price tag

TaxCloud is best for cost-conscious online sellers who want calculation, nexus tracking, and filing without paying enterprise prices. Its biggest advantage is its status as a Certified Service Provider under the Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) program.

Why We Like TaxCloud

SST is an agreement among 24 member states to simplify how sales tax is administered. Because TaxCloud is a certified provider, eligible sellers can get registration, calculation, filing, and remittance for free in those states.

The catch is eligibility. TaxCloud says orders to SST states don’t count toward your plan allotment only if you’re enrolled in SST for those states and have no physical nexus there.

Key Features

  • Return-ready sales tax reports for all states
  • Filing and remittance as a service, with nexus alerts when it’s time to register
  • Free SST-state services for eligible sellers
  • Exemption management in WooCommerce and standardized exemption certificate processing across SST states
  • API access on the Premium plan

Ecommerce Integrations

The plan you pick decides how deep the integration goes. Starter pulls in orders on a schedule (Shopify, QuickBooks Online, and WooCommerce in data-import mode) for reporting and filing. Premium adds real-time calculation at checkout for BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Adobe Commerce, Magento, Miva, Odoo, and Chargebee.

On Shopify, tax is calculated at checkout by Shopify itself, and TaxCloud takes the order data from there. If you run WooCommerce, TaxCloud has a native plugin. For other store add-ons, browse our roundup of the best WooCommerce plugins for ecommerce.

TaxCloud Pricing

Starter from about $19/month; Premium from about $79/month, with higher order tiers costing more. Filing outside SST states is priced separately, and the 30-day free trial doesn’t include filing or registration. Pricing can vary based on transaction volume and the features your business needs.

TaxCloud Pros and Cons

✓ Pros

  • Low entry price
  • Free SST-state services for eligible sellers
  • Native WooCommerce plugin and BigCommerce integration
  • Filing is part of the service

− Cons

  • Real-time checkout calculation requires Premium
  • Starter relies on scheduled imports
  • SST savings don’t apply where you have physical nexus
  • Less ERP and enterprise tooling than Avalara

Who Should Use TaxCloud?

Small and mid-size stores on WooCommerce, BigCommerce, or Shopify that sell into several SST states and want predictable monthly costs. It tends to pay off fastest when many of your customers live in SST member states.

Who Should Consider an Alternative?

Sellers with complex ERP setups, heavy international sales, or a preference for a team that handles every state notice for them. Zamp or Avalara may fit better.

If you’re looking for a simpler, lower-cost way to handle sales tax, take a look at TaxCloud.

3. Zamp — Best for Fully Managed Sales Tax

Best forGrowing digital and ecommerce brands that want to hand off sales tax
Pricing modelCustom-scoped quote with registrations, filings, and notices bundled
IntegrationsShopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Stripe, Adobe Commerce, NetSuite, QuickBooks Online, Xero
Ease of useVery hands-off; Zamp does the work
ScalabilityHigh within its managed model
Ideal customerBrands filing in many states without an in-house tax team

Zamp is best for ecommerce businesses that want a team, not software, running their sales tax. It pairs automated calculation with experts who handle registrations, filings, and state notices.

Why We Like Zamp

Zamp’s pitch is accountability. Under its commitment, if a Zamp-managed calculation or filing results in penalties or interest, Zamp covers the cost. That’s a meaningful difference from tools that hand you a report and leave the filing to you.

One honest caveat: Zamp’s partner materials describe its typical client as a growing digital business in roughly the $5M to $300M revenue range. Very small stores may not be the target.

Key Features

  • Real-time tax calculation through an API
  • Registrations, filing, and remittance handled for you
  • State notice handling
  • A dedicated account and onboarding manager, according to its BigCommerce app listing
  • U.S. and Canada sales tax

Ecommerce Integrations

Zamp lists Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Stripe, Adobe Commerce, NetSuite, QuickBooks Online, and Xero. That range suits sellers who sell across several storefronts and keep their books in a separate accounting tool.

Zamp Pricing

Custom pricing. Zamp doesn’t publish a price list. Its bundled model covers registrations, filings, notices, and support. Its BigCommerce app listing has shown pricing starting at $199/month, but treat that as a ballpark and ask for a quote. Pricing can vary based on transaction volume and the features your business needs.

Zamp Pros and Cons

✓ Pros

  • Hands-off registration, filing, and notices
  • Covers penalties from its own errors under its commitment
  • Bundled pricing is easier to predict
  • Wide integration list

− Cons

  • No published price list
  • Sales-led onboarding
  • Likely too much for very small stores
  • Less self-serve control than software-first tools

Who Should Use Zamp?

Brands with nexus in many states, no finance team to manage filings, and enough volume that paying for a managed service beats the hours (and risk) of doing it yourself.

Who Should Consider an Alternative?

Early-stage stores that want inexpensive self-serve software, and anyone who needs published pricing before talking to sales. TaxCloud or Quaderno are easier to price out.

Ready to hand off registrations and filings? Visit Zamp and see how its managed approach fits your store.

4. Numeral — Best for Pay-Per-Filing Pricing

Best forSmall and mid-size DTC brands on Shopify or WooCommerce
Pricing modelFree Monitoring plan; Standard at $75 per filing and $150 per registration; Pro is custom
IntegrationsShopify, WooCommerce, and billing systems
Ease of useHands-off; filing is done for you
ScalabilityGood, but cost grows with the number of states you file in
Ideal customerEcommerce brands filing in a handful of states

Numeral is best for ecommerce brands that want filing done for them and prefer paying per return over a monthly subscription. Its free Monitoring plan is also a low-risk way to find out where you’ve crossed a threshold.

Why We Like Numeral

The Monitoring plan covers nexus tracking, an exposure audit, and alerts once you connect your stores. When you’re ready, the Standard plan adds automated filing and remittance, automatic registration when you cross a threshold, a virtual mailbox for state notices, and tax code classification.

Numeral also backs filings with a guarantee: if sales tax isn’t filed on time, it pays the resulting penalties and interest. There’s no long-term contract, and clients pay month to month.

Key Features

  • Free nexus monitoring and exposure audit
  • Automated filing and remittance, plus automatic registration
  • Virtual mailbox for state notices
  • Automatic tax code classification and CSV import
  • Pro plan: exemption certificate management, API access, voluntary disclosure agreements, access to sales tax experts, and global VAT coverage

Ecommerce Integrations

Numeral connects to Shopify and WooCommerce stores and integrates with billing systems, and you can connect and test integrations on the free plan before upgrading.

Numeral Pricing

Free Monitoring; Standard at $75 per filing and $150 per registration; Pro is custom. There’s no monthly platform fee on Standard. As an illustration, filing monthly in five states means 60 returns a year, or $4,500. Filing quarterly in those same states means 20 returns, or $1,500. Your filing frequency is set by each state, so your numbers will differ.

Numeral doesn’t appear to participate in the Streamlined Sales Tax program, so you’d pay the per-filing rate even in SST states. That’s one place TaxCloud can come out cheaper.

Numeral Pros and Cons

✓ Pros

  • No monthly platform fee
  • Free monitoring to check your exposure
  • Late-filing guarantee
  • No long-term contract

− Cons

  • Per-filing costs add up with more states and frequent filing
  • Exemption certificates, API, and expert access sit on the custom Pro plan
  • No free SST-state filing
  • Smaller integration list than Avalara

Who Should Use Numeral?

Brands that file in a few states, want the filing off their plate, and would rather pay as they go than commit to a subscription.

Who Should Consider an Alternative?

Sellers filing in many states every month, where $75 per return stacks up quickly. TaxCloud’s SST benefits or Zamp’s bundled pricing may work out better.

Curious where you stand today? Start with Numeral’s free monitoring and see whether you’ve crossed any state thresholds.

5. Quaderno — Best for Multichannel and Digital Sellers

Best forSellers using Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe, and PayPal side by side, or selling digital products abroad
Pricing modelPublished monthly tiers based on transactions
IntegrationsShopify, WooCommerce, Stripe, PayPal, Amazon FBA plugin, Easy Digital Downloads, Xero
Ease of useStraightforward
ScalabilityTiered plans up to very high volumes
Ideal customerSmall to mid-size multichannel and international sellers

Quaderno is best suited to ecommerce and digital sellers who collect payments through several platforms and want one place for tax records, invoices, and nexus alerts. It treats U.S. sales tax as one piece of a global picture that includes VAT and GST.

Why We Like Quaderno

Quaderno tracks economic nexus thresholds using sales data piped in from your channels, then alerts you when you’re approaching a registration trigger. It also generates invoices and receipts automatically and produces tax reports you can use for filing.

Here’s how it works with each platform. On Shopify, Shopify still calculates tax at checkout, and Quaderno turns that sales data into records and reports. With WooCommerce, the Quaderno plugin can apply the right rate by product type. With Stripe, Quaderno reads transaction details and treats Stripe prices as tax-inclusive. Registration and filing services are available for VAT, GST, and U.S. sales tax.

Key Features

  • Economic nexus monitoring across connected sales channels
  • Automatic invoices, receipts, and credit notes
  • Tax reports prepared for filing
  • Registration and filing services for U.S. sales tax, VAT, and GST
  • Native integrations plus an API

Ecommerce Integrations

Quaderno connects to Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe, PayPal, Easy Digital Downloads, Xero, GoCardless, and an Amazon FBA plugin. If you’re still comparing processors, our guide to the best payment gateways for ecommerce explains how each one handles checkout and fees.

Quaderno Pricing

From $29/month. Quaderno’s support pages list Hobby at $29 (25 transactions), Startup at $49 (250), Business at $99 (1,000), and Growth at $149 (2,500), with Enterprise tiers above that. Extra transactions cost 25 cents each. Plan details have shifted over time, so confirm current tiers. Pricing can vary based on transaction volume and the features your business needs.

Quaderno Pros and Cons

✓ Pros

  • Published, tiered pricing
  • Works across several platforms at once
  • Handles VAT and GST as well as U.S. sales tax
  • Invoicing is built in

− Cons

  • Invoices, receipts, credit notes, and expenses all count as transactions
  • Confirm what filing and registration services cost on top of the plan
  • U.S. resale-certificate management isn’t its focus
  • Less ERP depth than Avalara

Who Should Use Quaderno?

Smaller sellers who run more than one storefront or payment processor, or who sell digital goods to customers outside the U.S. and need one system for all their tax records.

Who Should Consider an Alternative?

U.S.-only sellers with heavy wholesale exemptions or ERP needs (look at Avalara), and brands that want every state notice handled for them (look at Zamp).

Selling through more than one platform? Take a look at Quaderno and see how it fits into your payment workflow.

Which Tax Software Should You Choose?

Choose Avalara If…

You sell across several channels, collect exemption certificates from wholesale buyers, or run an ERP. You’re comfortable with a quote-based price in exchange for breadth.

Choose TaxCloud If…

Budget matters most and a good share of your customers live in SST member states. It’s also a natural fit for WooCommerce and BigCommerce stores.

Choose Zamp If…

You want registrations, filings, and notices handled by a team, and your volume justifies a custom-priced managed service.

Choose Numeral If…

You file in only a few states and like paying per return. Start with the free monitoring to see where you stand.

Choose Quaderno If…

You use several storefronts and payment processors, or sell digital goods internationally, and want one set of tax records and invoices.

Where TaxJar, Stripe Tax, Vertex, and Sovos Fit

You’ll see these names in almost every sales tax search, so here’s a quick orientation. We didn’t give them full reviews because we couldn’t confirm a publisher-friendly partner program for each, but they may still belong on your shortlist.

TaxJar

Stripe acquired TaxJar in 2021. TaxJar’s support documentation says its affiliate program ended after the acquisition, and its site now points new customers toward Stripe Tax. Existing customers can keep using TaxJar. Visit TaxJar for current status.

Stripe Tax

Stripe Tax calculates and collects tax inside Stripe payments, which makes it a natural option if you’re all-in on Stripe. Stripe’s documentation says it can register with U.S. tax authorities on your behalf and integrates with TaxJar for U.S. filing. See Stripe Tax for details.

Vertex and Sovos

Both are enterprise-grade, sales-led platforms. Their partner programs are aimed at consultancies, resellers, and accounting firms rather than content publishers. For a typical online store they’re more than you need, but if you run an ERP-centered operation with a finance team, ask both for a quote: Vertex and Sovos.

How Ecommerce Tax Software Helps Online Businesses

These scenarios are illustrative, not individual tax advice, but they show where software earns its keep.

Selling to customers in multiple states

A candle brand shipping from one state starts getting orders everywhere. Software tracks sales by state, alerts you as you approach each threshold, and applies the right rate once you’re registered.

Reaching economic nexus thresholds

Thresholds are easy to miss when sales arrive in small amounts across dozens of states. Monitoring tools like Numeral’s free plan or Quaderno’s alerts flag them before they become back-tax problems.

Selling through Shopify or WooCommerce

Shopify and WooCommerce can calculate basic tax, but you still need registration, return preparation, and reporting. That’s where tools like TaxCloud, Avalara, and Zamp connect to your store and take over. If you’re still deciding between platforms, our Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison is a good starting point, and once you’re on Shopify, see our picks for the best Shopify apps for ecommerce.

Selling on multiple marketplaces

In most states with a sales tax, marketplaces like Amazon collect and remit tax on sales made through their platforms. Your own website sales are still your responsibility, so you need records that combine both. Multichannel tools such as Avalara and Quaderno are built for that. Pairing them with inventory management software keeps your order data clean across channels.

Managing tax exemptions

Wholesale and nonprofit buyers may be exempt, but you need a certificate on file to prove it. Avalara’s certificate management and Numeral’s Pro plan address this directly.

Growing from a small store to a larger operation

Early on, a low-cost plan or free monitoring may be enough. As states and channels multiply, many sellers move toward managed services or broader platforms. Plan for that path when you choose.

Reducing manual spreadsheet work

Exporting orders, matching rates, and building state returns by hand can eat hours each month. Automating even part of it (calculation, reporting, or filing) removes the most error-prone steps. Pair it with ecommerce analytics software and you’ll have cleaner order data to work from.

What Is Ecommerce Sales Tax Software?

Ecommerce sales tax software: A tool that calculates the correct sales tax on online orders and, depending on the product, tracks nexus, registers your business, prepares and files returns, and stores exemption certificates.

Some tools only calculate tax. Others file for you. A few combine software with a team that does the work. Knowing which of those you need is the first decision.

What Is Sales Tax Nexus?

Sales tax nexus: A connection between your business and a state that requires you to collect and remit that state’s sales tax.

Physical nexus usually comes from having an office, warehouse, employees, or inventory in a state. Inventory held in a fulfillment center can count in some states, so check before you assume.

What Is Economic Nexus?

Economic nexus: A sales tax obligation created by your sales activity in a state, such as passing a revenue or transaction threshold, even if you have no physical presence there.

Economic nexus took hold after the 2018 U.S. Supreme Court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair. Many states use $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions, but not all do. California and Texas, for example, use $500,000. Always check each state’s current rules.

Do Ecommerce Businesses Need Sales Tax Software?

If you sell to customers in more than one state and your sales are growing, you probably need at least monitoring, and likely automation. If you sell in a single state with no meaningful sales elsewhere, a spreadsheet may still work. The more states, channels, and products you add, the faster manual work becomes a risk.

What Does Sales Tax Software Actually Automate?

  • Calculation: applying the right rate at checkout based on the customer’s address and the product
  • Nexus tracking: watching your sales against each state’s thresholds
  • Registration: applying for sales tax permits where you owe tax (not every tool does this)
  • Filing and remittance: preparing returns and sending payments to the state
  • Exemption certificates: collecting and storing proof for exempt buyers
  • Reporting: producing return-ready reports by state and jurisdiction

A note on tax advice: This guide is general information, not tax or legal advice. U.S. sales tax rules vary by state and by business circumstances. Consult a qualified tax professional when you’re unsure where you owe tax or how to register.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best tax software for ecommerce?

There isn’t one best tool for every store. Avalara suits complex, multi-channel sellers, TaxCloud is the budget pick, Zamp and Numeral take registration and filing off your plate, and Quaderno fits sellers using several payment platforms. Match the tool to your volume, the number of states you sell into, and how much work you want to hand off.

What is the easiest sales tax software for small ecommerce businesses?

TaxCloud and Quaderno are typically the most approachable for small stores because they publish entry-level pricing and connect to Shopify and WooCommerce. Numeral is the easiest if you’d rather not touch filing at all, since you pay per return.

Do Shopify stores need sales tax software?

Not always. Shopify’s built-in tax tools can handle basic calculation at checkout, but they may not cover every sales channel or every filing need. Add dedicated software when you sell across several states, use multiple channels, or want registration and filing handled for you.

Does ecommerce tax software work with WooCommerce?

Yes. Avalara offers a WooCommerce extension through the Woo Marketplace, TaxCloud has a native plugin, and Quaderno has its own WooCommerce plugin. Zamp and Numeral also list WooCommerce support.

How does sales tax software determine the correct tax rate?

It matches the customer’s shipping address to the tax jurisdictions that apply (state, county, city, and special districts), then applies the rate and your product’s taxability rules. Address-level accuracy matters because rates can differ within a single ZIP code.

What is economic nexus?

Economic nexus is a sales tax obligation that comes from your sales into a state, such as passing a revenue or transaction threshold, even without a physical presence. Thresholds vary by state, so check each one or use a tool that monitors them for you.

Can sales tax software file returns automatically?

Some tools can. Avalara files through Avalara Returns, TaxCloud and Numeral include filing as part of their service, and Zamp handles filing as a managed service. Quaderno offers registration and filing services. Calculation-only tools leave filing to you, so confirm what’s included in your plan.

Is sales tax software worth it for a small online store?

Often, once you sell into more than one state. The cost is usually modest compared to the hours saved and the risk of under-collecting tax. If you’re well under every threshold, free monitoring such as Numeral’s Monitoring plan is a low-cost way to keep watch.

What is the difference between TaxJar and Avalara?

Avalara is a broad, quote-priced platform with separate products for calculation, filing, and exemption certificates. TaxJar was built for small-business sales tax and was acquired by Stripe in 2021, and its site now points new customers toward Stripe Tax. Existing TaxJar customers can continue using it.

Can Stripe Tax handle sales tax?

Yes. Stripe Tax calculates and collects tax on Stripe payments. Stripe’s documentation says it can register with U.S. tax authorities on your behalf and integrates with TaxJar to automate U.S. filing.

Do ecommerce businesses need to register for sales tax in every state?

No. You generally register only in states where you have nexus, whether physical or economic. Because rules differ by state, a tax professional can confirm where you need to register.

How much does ecommerce tax software cost?

It ranges from entry-level plans around $19 to $29 a month (TaxCloud, Quaderno), to per-filing pricing at $75 per return (Numeral), to custom quotes (Avalara, Zamp). Your cost depends on transaction volume, the number of states, and the features you need.

Ready to Simplify Ecommerce Sales Tax?

The right software cuts manual work and helps you stay on top of sales tax as you add states and channels. Start with the tool that matches how hands-on you want to be:
